How Many Miles Are in a Kilometer?
One kilometre is 0.621371 miles — call it 0.62 miles. Going the other way, one mile is 1.609344 kilometres, or about 1.61 km.
Quick mental shortcuts
- km → miles: multiply by 0.6, then add a bit. (10 km ≈ 6 + 0.2 = 6.2 miles.)
- miles → km: multiply by 1.6. (5 miles ≈ 8 km.)
- The two scales cross near 5 km ≈ 3.1 miles — worth memorising, since it's the most common race distance.

Converting speed and pace
Distance and pace convert in opposite directions, which trips people up:
- Speed: 1 mph = 1.609 km/h. So 10 km/h = 6.21 mph.
- Pace: a min/km figure is always the smaller number, because a kilometre is shorter than a mile. 5:00 per km = 8:03 per mile.
If you're converting a treadmill set in km/h to a familiar per-mile pace, that second line is the one that matters.
