How far can you walk in an hour?

At an average pace, 3 to 4 miles (5 to 6.5 km). That's the figure to use for planning a route or estimating a commute on foot.

What changes your walking time

  • Hills — a moderate incline can add 3–5 minutes per mile.
  • Surface — sand, trail or snow is much slower than pavement.
  • Age and fitness — the biggest factor after terrain.
  • Traffic lights — in a town, easily 2–3 minutes per mile of stopping.

Brisk is the number that matters

For health benefits, the useful threshold is brisk — around 3.5 to 4 mph, fast enough that you could talk but not sing. Speed matters more than distance for cardiovascular benefit.

Work out your own times

Use the pace calculator to convert any walking speed into minutes per mile or per km over any distance. If you track steps, the steps-to-distance calculator turns your daily step count into miles — and the calories calculator estimates what that walk burned.
